INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked player, triumphantly claimed her first title at the Indian Wells tournament on Sunday, defeating Elena Rybakina with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).

In a thrilling conclusion at the BNP Paribas Open, Sabalenka sealed her victory with a powerful serve, prompting Rybakina to send it long. The match unfolded under the blazing sun, with temperatures climbing into the 90s.

The 27-year-old Sabalenka had a golden opportunity to clinch the third set but was broken while serving at 5-4. Rybakina then held a championship point during the tense tiebreak, only for Sabalenka to respond with a stunning backhand winner.

This showdown marked the 16th meeting between the two competitors, with Sabalenka now leading the head-to-head 9-7. Rybakina had previously outplayed Sabalenka at the 2025 WTA Finals and the Australian Open, as well as in last year’s Indian Wells finals.

“What a day,” Sabalenka exclaimed following her remarkable win.

In the men’s final set to follow, Daniil Medvedev will take on Jannik Sinner, who boasts an impressive record, winning eight of their last nine encounters.
