Jannik Sinner is laser-focused on his quest for the BNP Paribas Open title, aiming to make history as just the third player to claim all six ATP Masters 1000 titles on hard courts.

Throughout his career, hard courts have proven to be the perfect stage for the second-seeded Italian. He clinched his first tour-level trophy in Sofia (2020), secured his inaugural Masters 1000 title in Toronto (2023), and triumphed at the Australian Open (2024) on this surface. While he has also celebrated victories at the US Open (2024) and the Nitto ATP Finals (2024, ’25), the coveted Indian Wells title still eludes him.

Opposing him in the semi-finals is Alexander Zverev, who has stormed through the tournament with an electrifying and energetic game style. A seven-time Masters 1000 champion and former World No. 2, the towering German is now adopting a more aggressive approach, moving away from his traditional defensive strategy.

In this season, Zverev has fully embraced his newfound boldness, aiming to dominate opponents instead of merely outlasting them. With an impressive 102 winners struck in his four matches at Indian Wells—ranking just below Alcaraz’s 113—Zverev is clearly on the offensive. For context, Sinner has recorded 95 winners, while Daniil Medvedev trails with 88.

“I feel different this year,” Zverev noted during his first-round victory over Matteo Berrettini, expressing satisfaction in his more aggressive playstyle. “I was dictating the rallies from the baseline and playing on my terms. It worked well today,” he added after his win against Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.

This strategic shift has propelled Zverev into his first Indian Wells semi-final, making him the fifth player to reach the last four at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events since the series began in 1990, joining legends like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray.

To reach his first final in ‘Tennis Paradise,’ Zverev must overcome Sinner, a five-time Masters 1000 champion who hopes to join Federer and Djokovic as only the third man to secure all six hard-court Masters 1000 titles. Sinner currently leads their head-to-head encounters 6-4 and has won their last five meetings.

“It will definitely be a challenging match,” Sinner stated as he looks ahead to his encounter with Zverev. “We know each other well, so I’ll aim for consistent play. But I’m aware he has made some adjustments.”

“I’ve been watching some of his matches. He’s playing exceptional tennis. I’m excited for this opportunity. These are the moments I train for—the semi-finals of prestigious tournaments, which keep getting bigger,” he concluded.

With both players yet to drop a set in this tournament, they are in pursuit of their first title of the season. The winner will face two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final.
