As we celebrate the conclusion of another electrifying season, ATPTour.com proudly presents our annual ‘Best Of’ series, spotlighting the most fascinating rivalries, unforgettable matches, comebacks, and surprises of the year. This week, we turn our attention to the stand-out rivalries that defined the season.
The rivalry between Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien was one of the year’s greatest surprises. Medvedev began the year ranked in the Top 5, while Tien was still outside the Top 100—not exactly a recipe for a fierce competition. However, their three meetings in the Lexus ATP Head2Head turned out to be some of the most riveting encounters of the season.
With their all-court playing styles, each match evolved into a strategic masterpiece. The contrast between Medvedev’s seasoned experience and Tien’s youthful exuberance added yet another exciting dimension, especially considering the remarkable seven-inch height difference between the two talents.
Remarkably, all three encounters between Medvedev and Tien in 2025 were decided in the final set, with Tien leading the series 2-1. Their first clash at the Australian Open kicked off with a stunning five-set upset in favor of Tien, followed by two matches during the Asian hard-court swing that ended in a split.

The clash in Melbourne showcased a scoreline more akin to a puzzle than a tennis match, highlighted by three nail-biting tie-breaks and a dramatic 2:54 a.m. finish. Tien had a match point during the third set, which Medvedev saved with an ace, pushing the match into a gripping finale. Despite being a defending finalist, Medvedev let a lead slip in the deciding set and ultimately bowed out, while Tien celebrated triumphantly, basking in the glory of his victory.
“I was just relieved to win, even if I made it harder than it should have been,” Tien admitted with a grin after the match.
With impressive shot-making and relentless consistency, Tien became the second-youngest American man to reach the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, joining the esteemed company of Pete Sampras. Meanwhile, Medvedev concluded the major season with a disappointing 1-4 record.

In a rematch at the China Open, Medvedev appeared poised for redemption, leading the match and serving for victory at 5-3 in the second set. However, Tien maintained his composure, drawing errors from Medvedev in lengthy rallies. After leaving the court briefly, Medvedev returned with a taped-up leg and struggled to retain mobility, ultimately retiring and handing Tien a spot in his first tour-level final.
“I believed I could turn it around, even when I was down,” Tien said, reflecting on his comeback.

Just over a week later, Medvedev found himself face-to-face with Tien again in Shanghai, and this time, he emerged victorious. The match unfolded as a gripping high-stakes encounter, showcasing Medvedev’s resilience as he battled physical limitations. After cramping during the second set, the former World No. 1 rallied to secure the win, overwhelmed with relief at the end of the two-hour, 53-minute thriller.
Reflecting on the match, a weary but triumphant Medvedev stated, “I sincerely thought I might lose. I’m just thrilled to have pulled through.”
“Facing Tien, I can see he’s truly an exceptional player. He may not boast a towering serve, yet he proves why he’s climbing the ranks so quickly.”
