In a thrilling display of talent, Ottawa’s doubles ace Gabriela Dabrowski teamed up with Toronto’s Victoria Mboko, guiding Canada to a remarkable victory over Denmark in the Billie Jean Cup Group A playoffs held in Monterrey, Mexico.

Fresh from their singles matches just 20 minutes prior, Dabrowski and Mboko triumphed over Denmark’s Emma Kamper and Johanne Christine Svendsen with a decisive score of 6-2, 6-4 in just 59 minutes, clinching the best-of-three series 2-1.

The Canadian duo showcased their skills with four aces and a single double fault, amassing 62 points out of the 100 available. They effectively converted three out of their break point opportunities.

In a crucial match leading up to the doubles, Mboko fought hard to secure a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Christine Svendsen, leveling the Group A playoff at 1-1.

“I focused on taking it point by point and keeping my composure,” Mboko shared in a post-match interview, reflecting on her strategy while Canada was trailing 1-0.

Mboko delivered an impressive performance, notching 11 aces and winning 86 percent of her first serve points, while her opponent struggled with no aces and four double faults, converting only 63 percent of her first serves.

The Canadian athlete capitalized on 5 of 12 break points, while Christine Svendsen managed to win 2 of 5 break points, saving 7 out of 12.

In an earlier match, Cadence Brace of Toronto faced a hard-fought loss to Rebecca Munk Mortensen. The 20-year-old Brace initially took the lead, winning the first set 6-3, but ultimately fell in a gripping three-set battle, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), which stretched over an exhausting three hours and 41 minutes.

Brace registered two aces along with six double faults, while Munk Mortensen recorded four aces with eight double faults of her own.

Statistically, both players were closely matched, though Munk Mortensen had a slight advantage in break points won (7 of 14), break points saved (15 of 23), and match points saved (9-2).

Looking ahead, Canada prepares for a decisive showdown against Mexico on Sunday, with the winner earning a spot in the 2026 Qualifiers. Mexico secured their place by defeating Denmark 2-1 in their Group A playoff on Friday.
