While Henry Patten aims for glory at the Nitto ATP Finals with partner Harri Heliovaara, he has already scored a lifetime victory this week.

On Sunday, just a day ahead of his season finale debut, Patten took a leap into love, popping the question to his long-time sweetheart, Ellie Stone.

“Ellie and I have been together for nearly a decade now,” Patten revealed to ATPTour.com. “It was bound to happen eventually, especially since being a tennis player means I seldom get to spend time with her during the year. This was one of the rare trips she chose to join me.”

With a ring safely tucked away since Wimbledon, Patten had his eyes set on Turin for the momentous occasion. He arrived a day early to scout the picturesque Basilica di Superga, providing a breathtaking view of the city.

“It was surprisingly tranquil. I went up early on a stunning morning and asked her to look over at the chimneys, crafting some excuse, before proposing,” said Patten. “I was thrilled to see her reaction—she was genuinely surprised and extremely happy, which I believe earns me some extra points!”

Patten, a doubles sensation, first crossed paths with Stone during his college days at the University of North Carolina Asheville, where she played soccer. Their bond has flourished ever since.

It’s often challenging for them to carve time out together, as Stone is currently entrenched in her second year of medical residency in North Carolina.

“She’s officially a doctor and is in the thick of becoming fully qualified,” Patten explained. “With the demands of her job, she hardly gets time off and can’t travel much. It’s not feasible for her to work remotely; she’s at the hospital around the clock.”

Despite the excitement of his engagement, Patten quickly shifted gears to prepare for his match inside Inalpi Arena on Monday, where he and Heliovaara faced off against Christian Harrison and Evan King.

“Honestly, I was way more anxious about proposing than I was about my first match,” Patten laughed. “That’s for sure!”

Currently, Heliovaara and Patten hold a 1-1 record in the John McEnroe Group and still have an opportunity to advance to the semi-finals. While Patten aspires to go as far as possible in Turin, he will walk away from the city proud regardless of the outcomes.

“This engagement means the world to me, far more than any match. After 10 wonderful years, I am absolutely thrilled to start this next chapter with her,” Patten expressed. “It’s a huge moment, even in the context of one of the biggest tournaments, but I’m making sure to keep my focus on the tennis as well.”
