Raphael Collignon concluded an extraordinary weekend at the Davis Cup qualifiers, leading Belgium to an impressive comeback victory against Aleksandar Vukic on Sunday in Sydney.
After overcoming cramps during a stunning upset of World No. 8 Alex de Minaur the day before, Collignon triumphed 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory for Belgium at Ken Rosewall Arena. The No. 91 player in the PIF ATP Rankings broke Vukic’s serve twice apiece in both the second and third sets, marking a historic win for the European team.

Although Australia initially faced a daunting 0-2 deficit, they nearly staged a remarkable comeback, leveling the score at 2-2. Rinky Hijikata and Jordan Thompson won the crucial doubles match against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4, followed by De Minaur’s victory over Zizou Bergs, 6-2, 7-5. However, the resilient 23-year-old Collignon had other plans.
“Yesterday was incredibly physically demanding,” Collignon reflected after his win over Vukic, as reported on the Davis Cup website. “I focused on recovery as much as possible for today. It was an excruciating wait, but I did everything I could to prepare for this match, and I’m thrilled with my performance.”
“Physically, I felt fine. The adrenaline and energy from the support team made it feel like nothing could stop me. The atmosphere was electric, and what a match it turned out to be.”
Belgium, which reached the Davis Cup finals in 2015 and 2017, is back in the tournament’s last eight for the first time since 2018. The 2025 Davis Cup Final 8 will take place in Bologna from November 18-23. Alongside Belgium, other confirmed qualifiers include host nation Italy, Argentina, Austria, Czechia, France, and Germany.
