The climax of the 2025 Grand Slam season promises a thrilling encounter between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in New York.

These fierce competitors, who have claimed the last seven Grand Slam championships, will etch their names in history as the first players in the Open Era to meet in three Grand Slam finals in a single season. This time, the stakes are elevated as both will battle for supremacy in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. EDT/8 p.m. CEST.

The victor in New York will not only take home the title but also secure the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings come Monday. Sinner is riding high with 65 consecutive weeks at the top, while Alcaraz aims to reclaim the throne he last held in September 2023.

This high-stakes match is also pivotal in the race for ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honors. Currently, Alcaraz leads Sinner by 1,890 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, but a triumph at the US Open would narrow that gap to 1,190 points. Both players have already secured their spots in the year-ending Nitto ATP Finals.

The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has evolved into one of the most captivating in modern sports, with their first memorable clash occurring in New York three years ago. Alcaraz, in an exhilarating five-set quarter-final in 2022, saved a match point en route to his US Open title.

Every duel since has been preceded by immense excitement, with both athletes delivering unforgettable performances. Prior to this year’s encounters at Roland Garros, Sinner and Alcaraz had never faced off in a Grand Slam final, but they now gear up for their third consecutive showdown.

“I thrive on these challenges. Meeting a player like Carlos pushes me to my limits, providing invaluable feedback,” Sinner remarked before the match. “As we’ve played against each other more often, our approaches are evolving.”

Alcaraz holds a 9-5 lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series. This final in New York marks their fifth meeting of the year, with all encounters being finals: Alcaraz emerged victorious in Rome, Roland Garros (after an incredible comeback), and Cincinnati (where Sinner retired), while Sinner claimed victory at Wimbledon.

“I always learn from past matches. Facing Jannik, I’ll review what worked and what didn’t to prepare for this final,” Alcaraz stated after his semi-final win over Novak Djokovic.

Both athletes are in impressive form at Flushing Meadows. Sinner, the top seed, rides a 27-match winning streak on hard courts at majors, having conceded just two sets throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Alcaraz, the second seed, has not dropped a single set and decisively defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic in the semifinals. Despite their success, both remain focused on continual improvement.

“Physically, Jannik has made tremendous strides. It’s no secret he’s worked hard on his fitness,” Alcaraz noted, referencing Sinner’s minor medical timeout during his semi-final match, which Sinner later downplayed. “He’s now capable of maintaining his performance at peak levels for extended periods.”

Sinner, with his impeccable baseline striking, will aim for strong returns in the final. After his latest victory over Auger-Aliassime, he acknowledged Alcaraz’s improved serving, noting the Spaniard has lost only two service games during the tournament.

“He’s significantly improved his serve, showing greater consistency and speed,” Sinner remarked about Alcaraz, who boasts a 54-6 record this season according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. “His performance has evolved immensely in recent years.”

As they approach this highly anticipated matchup, it borders on inconceivable that two young stars—Sinner at 24, with four major titles, and Alcaraz at 22, with five—can elevate their already high game even further. Yet, fans are continually taken aback by the brilliance both rivals bring. Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with its 23,000-seat capacity, sets the stage for yet another exhilarating chapter in this dynamic rivalry.
