NEW YORK — In a surprising turn of events, Daniil Medvedev has decided to part ways with his longtime mentor, Gilles Cervara, following a lackluster season in Grand Slam tournaments that culminated in an unfortunate first-round exit at the US Open.

The 2021 US Open champion and Cervara both took to Instagram on Sunday, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their fruitful collaboration, which saw Medvedev ascend to the pinnacle of the ATP rankings.

“Thank you for being an incredible guide throughout these years. I look forward to what the future holds for us,” Medvedev shared alongside a nostalgic photo of them proudly displaying their US Open trophies, reflecting on their remarkable 8-10 year journey together.

Having clinched 20 titles, Medvedev now finds himself ranked No. 13, enduring disappointing first-round losses in the last three major tournaments, includes two defeats to Benjamin Bonzi.

During his recent match against Bonzi, Medvedev erupted in frustration after a photographer disrupted the game, resulting in a fine of $42,500 from the US Open for unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse.

Cervara expressed his enjoyment in coaching Medvedev, stating, “Even in tough times, supporting you and collaborating with the team was a joy. Together, we aimed for excellence.”

“I will always remember your unique brilliance on the court. Your strength will undoubtedly return,” he concluded, leaving fans hopeful for Medvedev’s future.
