NEW YORK — Three-time Grand Slam semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov announced his withdrawal from the US Open on Tuesday, just over a month after suffering a torn chest muscle that forced him to retire during his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.

Dimitrov’s exit from the iconic All England Club on July 7, where he had won the first two sets only to succumb to injury in the third, marked a disappointing milestone: the fifth consecutive Grand Slam event in which the 34-year-old has been unable to finish a match. This trend extends back to both the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May, as well as last year’s Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Last year in New York, he had to stop his quarterfinal battle against Frances Tiafoe while trailing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1.

Dimitrov had a memorable run as a semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017, and Wimbledon in 2014.

Once ranked as high as No. 3 in the world, he currently sits at No. 21.

With Dimitrov out of the tournament, Alejandro Tabilo will fill his spot in the men’s singles bracket, set to commence on Aug. 24.

Brandon Holt is next in line to join the draw should another player withdraw. Holt achieved an upset against Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022, and he is the son of two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin.
