Two tennis legends will not be hitting the courts in Toronto this time.

Jannik Sinner, the Wimbledon champion, and the 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic have both announced their withdrawal from the National Bank Open presented by Rogers as of Sunday.

They both emphasized the need for recovery after their intense performances at the All England Club earlier this month.

At just 23 years old, Sinner emerged victorious at the National Bank Open in 2023 but incurred a right elbow injury during the fourth round at Wimbledon.

“I am genuinely saddened to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto, particularly because I have cherished memories of competing in Canada. Winning that title in Toronto two years ago marked the beginning of a remarkable journey for me, but after discussions with my team, focusing on recovery is paramount,” Sinner expressed in an official statement.

Djokovic, now 38, has a remarkable four titles from the Canada tournament under his belt.

He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon before facing Sinner and losing in straight sets.

Additionally, world No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 38 Jordan Thompson have also pulled out of the hard-court event, scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 7.

This year’s National Bank Open will showcase an extended 12-day format with 96 players competing.

The women’s tournament will run concurrently with the men’s in Montreal.
