Ons Jabeur is stepping back from the women’s tennis scene, with the three-time Grand Slam finalist expressing her desire to “rediscover the joy of simply living” in a heartfelt announcement on Thursday.

Previously ranked as high as No. 2 on the WTA Tour, Jabeur has faced a series of injury setbacks that have led her to her current position at No. 71. The 30-year-old from Tunisia ended her match prematurely at Wimbledon due to breathing issues; she had reached the finals in both 2022 and 2023, but will not be participating as the hard-court season kicks off.

“For the last two years, I’ve been pushing myself relentlessly, battling injuries, and overcoming various hurdles,” Jabeur shared on Instagram. “But if I’m honest, I haven’t felt truly joyful on the court for a while now.”

“Tennis is an incredible sport. However, I believe it’s time for me to take a step back and focus on myself: to breathe, heal, and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life.”

Jabeur made history as the runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2022, becoming the first woman since Serena Williams in 2019 to compete in the finals at both Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows within the same year. Although she aimed to become the first African or Arab woman to seize a Grand Slam title in the professional era, she ascended to the No. 2 spot in the WTA rankings shortly after.

This year, her record stands at 15-15, with her 2024 season impacted by a shoulder injury that limited her participation to just one match post-Wimbledon.

Jabeur, beloved by fans and fellow players alike, expressed her gratitude to her supporters.

“Even while I’m away from the court, I aim to stay connected in different ways and share this journey with all of you,” she concluded.
