Catching everyone by surprise, Venus Williams has accepted a wild-card entry to compete in singles at this month’s DC Open, marking the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s first tournament appearance in over a year.
Now 45, Williams is currently designated as “inactive” on the WTA Tour’s official website.
Her last match was during the Miami Open back in 2024.
“Washington, D.C. has an incredible vibe: the energy, the fans, the rich history,” Williams expressed in a statement shared by the tournament organizers on Friday. “This city has consistently embraced me, and I’m eager to take the court there once more.”
Venus last graced the courts of D.C. in 2022.
Mark Ein, chairman of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, commented, “Her influence transcends the sport, inspiring countless individuals both on and off the court. Our D.C. fans and community are thrilled at the prospect of watching her compete live this summer.”
Earlier this year, the Indian Wells tournament announced Williams would return to the tour, only to later clarify that she would not be participating.
Williams’ last appearances in Grand Slam events were in 2023, where she faced early exits at both Wimbledon—having slipped in the opening set and injuring her right knee—and the U.S. Open.
Her impressive collection includes five singles titles at Wimbledon, secured in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2008, as well as U.S. Open singles trophies in 2000 and 2001. In addition, she proudly holds 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, partnering with her sister Serena, who last competed at the 2022 U.S. Open, and boasts four Olympic gold medals.
In 2011, Venus revealed her diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that results in fatigue and joint pain.
