LONDON — Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand faced a tough exit from the Wimbledon women’s doubles tournament on Tuesday, falling to Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals.
The No. 2 seeds struggled to defend against their rivals, managing to convert just one out of three break points against the formidable Belgian and Russian duo.
The eighth-seeded Mertens and Kudermetova not only outperformed them in breaks but also showcased their serving prowess by out-acing Dabrowski and Routliffe with a tally of 7-2.
Last year, Dabrowski and Routliffe made it to the finals at the prestigious All England Club, but this time around, the 2023 U.S. Open champions faced elimination at the hands of Kateřina Siniaková from Czechia and Taylor Townsend from the United States.
At 33, Dabrowski has experienced heartache before, having reached the championship match in 2019 with former partner Xu Yifan from China, only to leave without the title.
Dabrowski stands as the last Canadian competitor at Wimbledon, as none of the six Canadians in the singles draws managed to progress beyond the second round.
