Leylah Fernandez delivered a commendable performance but met her match in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Canadian star was defeated 6-3, 7-6 (6) by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska during the initial quarterfinal showdown at the Nottingham Open, a prestigious grass-court event in England.

Ranked fifth, Fernandez showcased her resilience by battling through three match points in the tense second-set tiebreak, ultimately falling to the world No. 46.

At 22 years old, Fernandez had opportunities to turn the tide against Yastremska but only managed to convert one out of eight break points, while Yastremska capitalized on her two break-point chances.

The Laval, Quebec native had encountered a rough patch, losing her previous four matches before finding her rhythm with two victories in Nottingham.

Currently sitting at world No. 30, she is setting her sights on Wimbledon later this month, where she has yet to progress beyond the second round in her past appearances at the grass-court Grand Slam.
