PARIS — In a thrilling showdown, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka triumphed over Zheng Qinwen in straight sets, securing her spot in the French Open semifinals for the second time this Tuesday.
Chasing her maiden title at Roland-Garros, Sabalenka weathered a rocky start and blustery conditions to claim victory with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-3, enhancing her impressive record against the Olympic champion to 7-1.
While the score might suggest a decisive match, the intensity was palpable throughout, with only a slim margin separating the two competitors. Sabalenka’s poise during critical moments showcased her status as the world’s best, whereas Zheng faced challenges with her serve under pressure.
Next up, Sabalenka aims for her sixth Grand Slam final and her first at Roland-Garros, facing either defending champion Iga Swiatek or Elina Svitolina.
Zheng began with fervor on Court Philippe-Chatrier, breaking early and taking charge with her aggressive style.
However, two double faults during the eighth game allowed Sabalenka to seize the break and shift the momentum.
A critical miscalculation by Zheng in the 12th game nearly proved costly, but she managed to fend off a set point and pushed the match into a tiebreak. Yet, Sabalenka displayed her skill and consistency, ultimately clinching the set after Zheng misfired on a drop shot.
In the second set, Zheng saved a break point with a powerful overhead but fell prey to Sabalenka’s fierce backhand return, allowing the top seed to take a 3-2 lead. Zheng put up a valiant effort, breaking back immediately, but faltered in the closing games, dropping her final two service games.
This defeat snapped Zheng’s impressive streak of ten consecutive match victories at Roland-Garros, a run that began at last summer’s Olympic Games.
