Exciting news from the Italian Open WTA 1000 tournament! Canada’s own Bianca Andreescu has advanced to the fourth round, triumphing over No. 11 seed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan with a score of 6-2, 6-4 this Sunday.
The 24-year-old star from Mississauga, Ontario, showcased her skills by converting three crucial break points while saving five, sealing the match in just one hour and 27 minutes.
A former U.S. Open champion, Andreescu is making her comeback after an extended absence of nearly six months from the WTA Tour.
Ranked 121st currently, she achieved her first victory against a top-20 player this year with a hard-fought win against Croatia’s Donna Vekic, finishing the second-round match 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Interestingly, Rybakina had previously dominated their encounters, winning all three matchups without dropping a set, including a recent victory in the second round of the Madrid Open.
Looking ahead, Andreescu is set to face No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng, who recently claimed gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In other matches on Sunday, No. 24 seed Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.
Kostyuk’s performance was impressive, serving five aces and converting four break points, while Fernandez secured only one.
