While the Yarra River may not hold the secret to eternal youth,

38-year-old Gael Monfils continues to defy time on the court.

Kyrgios: The Journey Ends

Just days after making history as the oldest player to clinch a Tour-level title since 1977 with his victory in Auckland, Monfils was back at it, showing impressive prowess at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Monfils triumphed over Daniel Altmaier with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3), etching his name in the record books as the fourth player aged 38 or older to advance to the third round of the Australian Open since the full 128-player singles draw was introduced in 1988.

He joins the distinguished ranks of Dr. Ivo Karlovic (2018), Roger Federer (2020), and Feliciano Lopez (2021).

With poise under pressure, Monfils hit 37 winners while keeping unforced errors to 26, achieving the remarkable feat of reaching the third round for the 12th time—two decades after his debut against American Robbie Ginepri in 2005.

After the match, Monfils reflected on the invaluable gifts tennis has brought him.

Everything.

“I’ve always believed that health is the most important aspect,” Monfils shared with the media in Melbourne. “Tennis is a huge part of my life, and it’s been a beautiful journey.”

“This sport has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams, and I’m grateful. Anything beyond this is merely a bonus.”

Though he has expressed aspirations of reaching a major final, Monfils is at peace with his illustrious career.

“I could walk away now, feeling fulfilled,” Monfils remarked. “If I achieve more, it’s just a bonus. I’m content.”

Facing the challenge of advancing further in Melbourne won’t be easy.

Next on Monfils’ agenda is a match against US Open finalist Taylor Fritz.

The fourth-seeded Fritz dominated Cristian Garin, conceding just three games in an 82-minute victory.

With an impressive 8-1 record in 2025, Monfils aims to keep the momentum going.

“I’m focusing on consistency and staying healthy,” Monfils explained. “Last year I was in great form but fell short due to illness. After some time off, I enjoyed precious moments with my daughter and put in the work needed.”

“I feel fortunate to start this season strong. My body feels good, and I’m striking the ball well. I’m just riding this wave of success.”
