Thanks to the City of Las Vegas and the Darling Center our City has sponsored and attracted one of the best professional tennis tournaments a community can get, the TENNIS CHANNEL OPEN, March 3-9. Not only do we see Lleyton Hewitt, Bryan Brothers, Mirat Safin, Thomas Johansson, Fernando Gonzalez (World No. 7), Marcos Baghdatis and Guillermo Canas up close, but Las Vegas is featured year round on the only 24/7 all Tennis TV Network.

Jimmy Lovett from Henderson, Nevada, was chosen by the USTA Junior competition committee as the 2007-08 United States Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the State of Nevada.

"It is very rare that you find a student who excels at the top of his field nationally in both academics and athletics," said USTA-Nevada Executive Director Ryan Wolfington. "I remember he was getting up at 5 am daily to train for two hours before school, then a few hours after school, then studied all night and did it all over again, playing tournaments on weekends. He is the perfect example of all around excellence and a great inspiration for all players."

Straight A student "Gabby" Smith from Bob Miller Middle School just won both singles and doubles in the Copperbowl National , reaching a career high 14 in the United States in girls 12's tennis. She has also been chosen by the United States Tennis Association High performance team in Carson, California as an American hopeful. Ranked #3 in the USTA-Intermountain section, this player, developed by Saad Ashraf of NETT Academy, is also an accomplished pianist. "She is pretty much an all around good kid," said Saad Ashraf. "She is the hardest worker in my group of kids that I coach, she processes information very well, and she loves to compete. I have seen her get scared, but I have never seen her quit in a match."

The UNLV ďA Night with the RebelsĒ turned out to be a night to remember. The community of Las Vegas really showed its true colors as they came out to support the UNLV Menís Tennis Team in a fun-filled doubles mixer.
